Newark, New Jersey native Tony Petrello has enjoyed a great deal of success in his career with Texas based oil and gas industry leader Nabors Industries. He has also become very active in philanthropy. When his newborn daughter Carena was diagnosed with periventricular leukomalacia, he donated $7 million to Texas Children’s Hospital to help them build a world-class neurological center. Plus, he has played a major role in helping them to raise the $200 million it took to build, equip, staff and run the facility, now called the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute.
Another example of Tony Petrello’s generous philanthropy is the scholarship he set up at Yale, his alma mater. While earning his bachelor’s and master’s degree in mathematics at Yale, Petrello was taught and mentored there by famed mathematician Serge Lang. When the beloved professor died a few years ago, Tony Petrello donated $150,000 to endow a scholarship in his name. He also pledged an additional $150,000 to match donations others give to the scholarship fund set up in Professor Lang’s honor.
CEO Tony Petrello also made generous donations to his staff and other people in the Houston community that were impacted by Hurricane Harvey. In addition to giving significant financial support to several charitable organizations providing help to people whose lives were devastated by the hurricane, Tony Petrello also helped set up the Nabors Disaster Relief Fund. Through the fund he gave almost $175,000 as a donation matching the amount the Nabors Industries employees gave to the Hurricane Harvey disaster relief effort. The money was used to assist with the hands-on relief efforts.
At Nabors Industries, Tony Petrello and the staff also donated the use of the company’s kitchen to help feed people whose homes were damaged by the storms. The on-site kitchen was used to prepare a large number of hot meals. Petrello and Nabors Industries made sure that victims of the hurricane could receive 3 hot, nutritious, meals each day. Hurricane Harvey had a direct impact on about 10% of the Nabors Industries employees. Tony Petrello and Nabors Industries have done everything possible the provide help and return a sense of normalcy to their lives.
Through the Nabors Charitable Foundation the company has given its employees and their children educational scholarships valued in excess of $3 million. Tony Petrello continues to show what a kind and caring individual he is through his charitable giving.
